Calculating Bricks for Walls
Estimating the number of bricks required is the first step in masonry work. The count depends not just on the wall size but also on the brick size and the thickness of the mortar joint.
Standard Dimensions
Brick sizes vary by country. In India, the standard modular brick size is 190 × 90 × 90 mm.
The Calculation
Volume Method:
1. Calculate Volume of Wall = Length × Height × Thickness.
2. Calculate Volume of One Brick (with mortar).
3. Total Bricks = Wall Volume / Brick Volume.
1. Calculate Volume of Wall = Length × Height × Thickness.
2. Calculate Volume of One Brick (with mortar).
3. Total Bricks = Wall Volume / Brick Volume.
Pro Tip: Always add 5-10% extra for wastage and breakage during transport and cutting.
Types of Bonds
- Stretcher Bond: Bricks are laid flat with the long side exposed. Common for half-brick walls.
- English Bond: Alternate courses of headers (short side) and stretchers. Very strong.
- Flemish Bond: Headers and stretchers alternate in the same course. Aesthetic but requires skill.
